With its beautiful sandy beaches, its picturesque wee harbour and its year round atmosphere of family holiday, North Berwick is a favourite seaside town. Its geological history is seen in the landmark volcanic plugs of North Berwick Law and the Bass Rock, while the remnants of ancient lava flow which scatter the East Beach provide good clambering and fascinating rock pools for holidaying children of all ages. Boat trips to the islands provide sightings of seals, puffins and the Bass Rock gannetry whilst the large screens in the Seabird Centre have close up shots from strategically placed cameras. Popular as a place to linger on the decking, overlooking the sea or the seafilled outdoor paddling pool, the café at the Seabird Centre has views to the Bass along the East shore to the cliff top golf course at the Glen. Beside it is the Auld Green Kirk, notorious for its satanic rituals conducted by the 5th Earl of Bothwell, and the subsequent 16th century Witch Trials. Golf on the Links courses has attracted enthusiasts here for hundreds of years keeping the shops and hostelries busy and thriving. North Berwick also benefits from an hourly rail link to Edinburgh.
