A historic market town in the heart of Devon, Great Torrington enjoys stunning views over the river Torridge and surrounding farmland. It is a charming little town built around the Market Square, which houses a covered market with shops and stalls selling local produce. Great Torrington might be small in comparison to some other Devon towns, but it has its share of excellent cafes, pubs and restaurants. The town even boasts its own museum and Arts Centre. Though the Norman Castle is now gone, a car park and Visitor Centre welcome visitors today, the sharp drop to the river a testimony to the well sited Norman stronghold. One of the fiercest battles of the Civil War took place in Great Torrington in 1646, when the church was almost completely destroyed by an explosion of gunpowder, killing 200 Royalist soldiers taking refuge in its tower. Today, the 180 mile Tarka Trail can be accessed from Great Torrington, where walkers and cyclists can follow the adventurous route of Henry Williamson’s Tarka the Otter. It is in Great Torrington that the world famous Dartington Crystal is made. Visitors can tour the factory and buy the beautiful hand blown glass in the factory shop
