The north Cotswold town of Moreton-in-Marsh stands on the Fosse Way (now the A429) at the head of the Evenlode Valley. Given by Edward the Confessor to his new Abbey of Westminster in 1068, the village (as was) remained small until the 13th century when the Abbot of Westminster sought to exploit the commercial advantages of the Fosse Way. The new town was started in 1222 and granted the right of a weekly market in 1228. The town was closely connected with the wool industry and linen weaving and became an important staging point for travellers using the Fosse Way and the London to Worcester road (A44) that crossed it at the town; at one time there were 18 public houses and hotels in Moreton, including the White Hart Inn where King Charles 1 is reputed to have stopped at on his way to Evesham during the Civil War. During the 18th century many houses were rebuilt or refaced in local stone especially along the High Street. Redesdale Hall built in 1887, possibly on the site of the old market hall, was given to the Rural District Council by Lord Dulverton in 1951. The oldest building in Moreton is the Curfew Tower built in stone with a gabled turret it was probably built in the 16th century, the clock dates from 1648 and the bell, which was rung daily until 1860 is dated 1633. Just outside the town is the former RAF station built in 1941 to train Bomber Crews, it now houses the Fire Service Collage, the largest fire training centre in Europe. With it`s broad, tree-lined High Street and mellow Cotswold stone buildings Moreton-in-Marsh presents a picturesque spectacle for the visitor to enjoy.
