| 10 Places to Stay

Lough Eske is a relatively small lake located only a few kilometers away from Donegal town. Yet, it is so spectacularly beautiful, nestling at the foot of the dramatic Blue Stack Mountains and surrounded by gorgeous woodlands and heather-clad slopes, that it has become a holiday destination in its own right. Few residents live around Lough Eske, but guest houses, cottages and hotels have sprung up on its shores to take advantage of the idyllic scenery and the many sporting opportunities that the area has to offer. One luxury hotel and spa - the five-star Solis Lough Eske Castle - is housed in a magnificent, newly restored 17th Century castle and set at the heart of an ancient forest. Unsurprisingly, one of the most popular outdoor activities in these parts is fishing, not just in the lough and the River Eske, which connects it to Donegal Bay, but from rocks and other vantage points along the nearby coastline, and by boat trips out to sea. Golfers will enjoy the wonderful links course at Murvagh, while hikers, hill-walkers and climbers have miles of countryside and mountains to explore. Families, meanwhile, are close to sandy beaches and all the shops, fun, culture and nightlife of Donegal town.
