Events in Caerleon | 10 Places to Stay
Caerleon in the Usk Valley is a lovely small walled town off the M4 near Newport in Gwent. An important historical site, one of the three Roman legionary fortresses in Britain, Caerleon is often compared to Bath - so if you want to explore this period of history without the usual throng of tourists, this is the place to come. Children will enjoy playing hide and seek in the open-air amphitheatre and across the road is the original site of the barracks. In July an Arts Festival is held (This is particularly well regarded for tree sculptures) there are also Roman Military re-enactments taking place. The museums are worth visiting - The small, re-constructed, Roman Bathhouse has informative displays and the National Roman Legion Museum holds Celtic as well as Roman artefacts. Caerleon is now home to one of the campuses of the University of Wales (Newport). The local pubs often have riverside settings and Caerleon has quaint shops and cafés. There are many places to stay but splashing out at the Priory Hotel in the High Street opposite the Roman Baths will leave you feeling that you have enough energy to complete a route march just like the Romans.
