Cushendun village is one of the loveliest spots in what's officially known as the Antrim Coast and Glens Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hugging a bay and a sandy beach just a few miles north of Cushendall, Cushendun is by-passed by the famous Antrim Coast Road. Still, visitors won't regret taking a short diversion to explore a village that's been described as "the prettiest in Ireland". Much of Cushendun falls within a conservation area managed by the National Trust, and its unique character comes from the Cornish-style terraces and cottages designed by architect Clough Williams-Ellis (who also created the Italianate buildings of Portmeirion, Wales - famed setting for the TV series "The Prisoner"). These houses co-exist harmoniously with the sea front and harbour, neighbouring Georgian lodges and historic buildings such as the old parish church, dating from 1839, which is now being reinvented as a venue for arts and educational projects. Older still are the remains of the ancient Carra Castle. Cushendun is located at the mouth of Glendun, one of the delightful Glens of Antrim, and the Dun river. With features ranging from a salmon fishery and caves to colourful shops and pubs, Cushendun offers something for everyone.
