Guiting Power Tips

Guiting Power is a small, pretty village nestling in the Northern Cotswolds close to the River Windrush, cottages cluster around the village green seemingly unchanged for centuries. The buildings were restored by a self help trust set up originally for twelve cottages in 1936 (now the Guiting Amenities Trust since the 1970`s) in order to maintain the traditional appearance of the village and it`s surroundings [although some may say that a lot of the houses have been over restored and consequently lost their personality!] The Saxon settlement was known as Gyring Broc - in the middle ages the village was known as Guyting Lower - the foundations of their church can be seen close to the present church of St.Michael, a Norman church that has been much altered although retaining a fine South Doorway; early 19th century transepts, the restoration of 1903 provided corbels of reigning monarchs. Further down is to be found Guiting Power Chapel a classic example of a 19th century village chapel; Guiting Grange is a stylish house of 1848 set in a nice little park. The area around Guiting Power is prime walking country with the Diamond Way long distance footpath passing through the village and walks along the Windrush valley or towards Guiting Woods. For the foot weary there are some fine watering holes, the Farmers Arms in the village and the Hollow Bottom Inn on the Winchcome road make a welcoming sight.
