Portsmouth Football Club was founded in 1898 with local brewery owner John Brickwood as Chairman. The club joined the Southern League in 1899. Their first match was played at Chatham Town, which they won 1-0. The following match was against Southampton, who became the team's local rivals. The match was the debut of Fratton Park, which has been the club's home ever since. The team's first title in the Southern League came in 1901-02. In 1927 they joined the first division and reached the FA Cup final the following year, only to lose to Bolton Wanderers. The team won the FA Cup at the third attempt in 1939, beating favourites Wolves 4-1. Due to the intervention of the Second World War, the team then held the trophy for a record time due to the postponement of all league matches until the 1945/46 season. They won back to back league titles in 1948-49 and 1949-50. During the 70's, 80's and 90's the club endured many difficulties, including relegation, financial problems and hooliganism. The club's fortunes changed when Milan Mandaric took over as chairman. Things really began to improve after he appointed Harry Redknapp as manager, with the team returning to top flight football in 2003. The relationship was a rocky one however, with Redknapp temporarily leaving the club for bitter rivals Southampton at one point. Since Redknapp's return the club has been taken over by Franco-Russian Alexandre Gaydamak and has gone from strength to strength.
