Launceston Rugby Union Football Club was founded in 1948 after an inaugural meeting chaired by the then Headmaster of Launceston College, Mr Spencer Toy. Also present at the meeting was Arthur Venning who is still a club member in 2008! Launceston play in a black strip and as a result are known as 'The Cornish All Blacks'.

In 1949 the team rented a ground from the local council but the facilities were primitive. Scaffold poles were used for goalposts and ex-army huts for changing rooms. The club moved to its current ground at Polson Bridge in 1969 and gradually improved its facilities by enlarging the clubhouse, adding changing rooms and eventually building a grandstand.

The beginning of the 1980's saw the team's first of many Cornwall Cup victories and marked the start of Launceston's rise to become one of the top 40 clubs in England This is an impressive feat for a town with a population of just 7,000.

In 2001 Launceston was promoted to National League Division Three (South). Two years later the team was promoted to National League Division Two. Following some roller coaster years the club reached National League Division One, the second tier of English Rugby, in 2007.
