Founded in 1861, Sale Sharks Rugby Union Football Club is an offshoot of Sale F.C. Sale itself is in Greater Manchester but the Sale Sharks actually currently play in Stockport at Edgeley Park, which they ground share with Stockport County F.C. Throughout its long history, Sale has been one of the strongest Rugby Union clubs in the Rugby League dominated North of England. In 1911 the team was unbeaten in 26 matches, winning 24 and drawing the remaining two. During the inter war period, Sale provided a consistent stream of international players to England, Scotland and Wales. The club continued to be a strong club but began to struggle in getting to grips with the realities of the professional world. Sale had to learn harsh financial and commercial lessons in a hurry in order to survive. In recent years the Sale Sharks have again become one of the powerhouse teams in the English Premiership. They won the Premiership final in 2006 by beating the Leicester Tigers 45-20 at Twickenham. This success has been helped by a host of star names such as Jason Robinson, Charlie Hodgson, the Lobbe brothers from Argentina and Sebastien Chabal, to name but a few.
