Formed 1879
Fulham are the oldest professional football team in London. They formed in 1879 as Fulham St Andrew's Church Sunday School and celebrated their 125th anniversary in 2004. The name was shortened to just Fulham in 1888.
The team play at Craven Cottage, which has a capacity of 24,525 and has been the club's home since 1896. Fulham was admitted to the Football League Second Division for the 1907-08 season, their first game being a 1-0 loss against Hull City.
The team enjoyed some long spells in the top flight between 1949 and 1968, but then slipped down the league for over 30 years. This lean period culminated in Fulham's lowest ebb, with the team finishing 17th in the lowest division in the Football League in the 1995-96 season.
New manager Micky Adams managed to affect the beginnings of a change in fortunes, before Mohammed Al Fayed bought the club and the revolution really began. By 2001 Fulham had returned to top flight football, in keeping with a promise made by Al Fayed that the team would be in the Premier League within five years. Unfortunately for Micky Adams, his part in the revolution was short-lived. He was fired shortly after the take over following a poor start to the season.
