The history of the Newcastle Falcons begins in 1877 with the formation of the Gosforth Football Club by a group of Old Boys from Durham School. In the early years the team played in the green and white hoops of Durham School, this continued right through to the 1890s. In 1882 the team merged with Northumberland and took on its name but reverted to Gosforth in 1887. Some star names bought success to the team in the 1970s, with future Gosforth, Bath and England coach Jack Rowell captaining the side at one point and men like Roger Uttley also helping drive the team to glory. Silverware came in the form of two consecutive John Player Cup (now the EDF Energy Cup) wins in 1976 and 1977. In 1989 the team bought a new ground at Kingston Park and changed its name to Newcastle Gosforth. Financial fortunes then wavered until 1995 when Sir John Hall, chairman of Newcastle United Football Club, bought a controlling interest in the club. The team changed its name again, this time to the Newcastle Falcons. His investment then bought in some star names and built a team that won promotion to the top flight in 1997 and went on to win the championship in 1998. The Falcons added Cup wins to its list of honours in 2001 and 2004.
