Bristol Football Club (as it was originally known) was founded in 1888 from the merger of two local teams. Carlton and Redland Park had decided to join forces and create one united Bristol team. Another local team Westbury Park had been offered the chance to join in the merger and refused. Westbury Park subsequently folded and many of its former players ended up joining the new Bristol team! After a few difficult years early on the Bristol team soon established itself, winning an impressive 20 out of 24 games in 1891-92. In 1900 J W Jarman became the first Bristol player to win a cap for England. In 1905 the Bristol team played against the first ever New Zealand All Blacks side, losing 41-0 on the day. The team had mixed fortunes in the 1950s but had some seasons to remember in the 1960s and early 1970s. In 1965-66 the Bristol team won 39 games, a feat that they repeated in 1971-72 when they were crowned unofficial English and Anglo-Welsh Champions. In 1983 Bristol won the John Player Cup (now the EDF Energy Cup). Bristol struggled and faced oblivion due to financial difficulties early in the professional era, but has since recovered and now plays in the Guinness Premiership.
