Founded in 1865, the team was originally known as Bath Football Club. It is one of the oldest clubs still in existence today. In the early days Bath would often play Welsh opposition such as Cardiff and Penarth, due to the proximity of Bath to South Wales. In the 1960s bath began to establish a fast attacking style of play but it was not until the appointment of coach Jack Rowell that Bath really began to establish themselves as one of the masters of the modern game. Under Jack Rowell, during the period from 1978 to 1995, Bath became one of the most feared teams in England and one of the top club sides in the world. Since the introduction of an official English championship in 1987, Bath has won the title six times. It has also won the league only to lose the title due to the play off system on one other occasion. The six championships were won in the space of just eight years and included four back to back titles. Since the advent of the professional era Bath has somewhat lost its domination of the sport in England but did become the first English team to win the Heineken European Cup in 1998.
