In 1873 a group of young men from the holy Trinity Church at Wakefield got together and formed the Wakefield Trinity Club. The team soon became a force in the early days of Rugby and, in 1895, they joined 22 clubs to break away from the Rugby Football Union to create the new code of Rugby League. In 1909 Wakefield won the Challenge Cup for the first time, beating Hull 17-0. This was to be the high spot in an otherwise lean period leading up to World War II. After the end of World War II, Wakefield Trinity returned to winning ways, taking the first Wembley final after the war after beating Wigan. The team won the Challenge Cup a further three times at the beginning of the 1960s, probably the club's golden era. Wakefield has won the League Championship on two occasions, both in the latter half of the 1960s. When Super League began, Wakefield just missed the cut and found itself excluded from the initial Super League. The club had been asked to merge with Featherstone Rovers and arch rivals Castleford to make a stronger Super League club but they have resisted this move. In 1998 Wakefield won the inaugural First Division Grand Final, beating Featherstone to gain promotion to the Super League.

You know, I go to the theatre to be entertained. I don’t want to see plays about rape, sodomy and drug addiction...I can get all that at home - Peter Cook
