The beginnings of the Leeds Rhinos can be traced back to an advert placed by H I Jenkinson in the Leeds Mercury in 1864. Jenkinson invited players to meet at Woodhouse Moor for a few days a week for one hour in the early morning. This advert attracted some 500 players and from these meetings several clubs were born. Leeds St Johns, who subsequently became the Leeds Rhinos, was amongst these teams and was officially founded in 1870. In 1888 the Cardigan Estate was auctioned and a group of Leeds citizens brought Lot 17a with a view to creating a top sporting club for Leeds. This land became the home for now world famous Headingley Stadium. In 1895 Leeds were founder members of the breakaway Northern Union. The northern clubs broke away to form their own union so that players could receive payment to compensate for time missed with their regular work, the Rugby Football Union did not allow full professionalism in the early days. Leeds is one of the most successful clubs in Rugby League, having won the league title seven times and the Challenge Cup eleven times – more than any other team. The Rhinos are also the best supported club in either Rugby code. In 2008 they won the World Club Challenge for the second time.
