Records show that a game of cricket between the Earl of Northumberland's XI and the Duke of Cleveland's XI took place at some time around the 5th August 1751, the earliest known reference to cricket being played in the county of Durham. In 1876 the first team known to have carried the name Durham County played a match against MCC, although Durham County Cricket Club wasn't officially formed in 1882. Until fairly recently, Durham played in the Minor Counties Championship, which they have won a record equalling seven times. During the period from 1976 to 1985, they put together an unbeaten run of 65 matches, a record still unbroken today. In 1989 Durham applied for first class county status and a place in the County Championship. They were accepted in 1991 and are now playing in the First Division of the County Championship. In 2007 Durham won its first major trophy, the Friends Provident Trophy, after beating Hampshire in the final. The growing strength of the team has been endorsed by the fact that a high number of Durham players have recently represented England at Test, One Day and Twenty Twenty cricket. All rounder Paul Collingwood became the first Durham player to hit a Test century for England and was recently made captain of the England One Day side.
