Chelsea Football Club was first formed at The Rising Sun pub (now the Butcher's Hook) in 1905 and gained election to the Football League soon afterwards. The club saw little success in its early years, although they did reach the FA Cup Final in 1915, only to lose to Sheffield United. Today, the team play at the 42,055 capacity Stamford Bridge. The team has a reputation for signing big name players and playing entertaining football, which stretches back to the inter war years. In 1954-55 the club finally won a major trophy, winning the League Championship. The Sixties and Seventies saw a period of successes and some near misses for Chelsea. They won the League Cup, the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup Winners Cup during this period. A turbulent period followed with Chelsea coming close to relegation to the third division for the first time. Ken Bates took over the club and a revival in fortunes began, with Chelsea making it back into top flight a few years prior to the formation of the Premier League. The team then enjoyed several FA cup wins and some European success but the Premier League title eluded them until 2004-05, following a takeover by Roman Abramovich and the appointment of Jose Mourinho as manager.
