Lucy Cross, near Aldbrough St John is an old coaching inn built in 1763, by the old Roman Road, Dere Street now the B6275 which was part of the Great North Road. The railways took away its trade in the 19th century although it remained an inn until 1947. Since then it has been a family home and Guest House.
