Slate mining has been brought back to Honister after more than a decade. The mine is again producing the beautiful green Honister slate, so famous for hundreds of years. In the Visitor Centre you can follow the history of the Honister mines.

The centre is a hassle free haven where you can see the beautiful green slate in use and buy examples if you want to. On the mine tour we'll provide helmet, light and a qualified quide to help you through the labyrinth of tunnels started by the Monks of Furness 500 years ago.

You'll be amazed at the illuminated awesome caverns where the green slate has been hewn out by hand for use over the world. After the mine tour you can enjoy tea or coffee in our cosy 'cabin'.

Part of the tour includes instruction on riving slates and a visit into the workshops - you might even get a chance to make your own slates! Around the site you can see lots of uses for our slates from obelisks to monoliths and worktops to water features.
