Thorpe Lodge is a listed Georgian house at the gateway to the Dales - the classic English family home with relaxed owners and, of course, dogs. Visitors use the South Wing with a separate entrance off the courtyard, which is a riot of flowers throughout the summer.

Bedrooms are traditional, very comfortable and vast - big enough to lounge in - with garden views and a shared guest sitting room.

The gardens and woodland, stretching over 12 acres, are open for the NGS every year. Themed borders abound and the walled garden has superb rose beds, formal ponds and tall green pillars reflected into the water. All around is the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, although Fountains Abbey and the cathedral city of Ripon are only a few miles away.

Tommy and Juliet Jowitt are impressive hosts who do everything with massive care and attention to detail while making sure their guests feel entirely at ease and at home.
