Though it maintains the idyllic surroundings and some of the original 15th century features, The Green Man in Essex certainly isn't your typical rural pub. A recent massive renovation has put a fresh, contemporary face on this old friend, bringing stylish warmth and urban character to the countryside. Keeping true to rural tradition, all the food for the regularly-changing menu at The Green Man is sourced within less than five miles of the establishment (when possible), and they also try to operate an ethical food policy that includes no battery chickens (or eggs) and only sustainable fishes – all cooked fresh to order. Start with a rustic ham hock terrine with roasted apple puree or fresh home made soup. Fillet steaks alone are worth a visit, procured from local butcher Mr Sweetlands and seared to perfection, or try the pan-fried fillet of Wild Salmon with coriander and chilli pesto. Save room for dessert, though choosing is difficult. For lighter bites, try the bar menu which includes Italian deli boards and fish & chips (though you're welcome to order from any menu while on the premises). Sophisticated wine list and lovely service -- an unexpected touch of luxury in the area.
