Akram's is a corker, dishing up genius Kashmiri cuisine in the South Birmingham suburb of Stirchley. It's owned by Mohammed Akram, whose original home in Kashmir gave birth to the balti and who was determined to provide the people of Birmingham with authentic balti cooking. His success is evident in dishes like Akram's balti seafood special, full of both small and king prawns and other fishy delights with just the right amount of spicing. The balti tandoori special is also a winner, with juicy chunks of lamb tikka, chicken tikka and tandoori chicken. The energetic staff demystify the menu with enthusiasm and good humour: the restaurant is spacious and it makes a nice change not to be seated cheek by jowl with the next table. Whatever you do, don't miss their signature naan bread – stuffed with cheese, garlic and peppers, this pizza-like speciality is almost a meal in itself.
