Baltic is the major new international centre for contemporary art, situated on the south bank of the River Tyne, Gateshead.

Architect Dominic Williams has redesigned the former Baltic Flour Mills, a disused 1950s grain warehouse, into a leading contemporary visual arts space, one of the biggest temporary art spaces in Europe.

Baltic will house 3,000 sq m of art spaces (five different galleries), artists' studios, a digital/media suite, a library and archive for the study of contemporary art, a cinema/lecture theatre and bookshop and retail outlet. Baltic will have three different food and drink spaces, in the main building the rooftop restaurant with glass walls on all sides will offer amazing views over Tyneside and the Riverside Café and Bar has an open air terrace overlooking the Tyne.

Baltic is an ambitious project, a new breed of public art space, an Art Factory, where artists from all over the world will come and work. It will present a constantly changing programme of exhibitions and events.
,br> Baltic opens 2002.
