We've visited several times over the last couple of years. The landlords, Geoff & Tracy, have really made their mark here: good food, good craic, and very good beer- particularly the hand pulls. The accomodation is clean and comfortable and comes with a decent breakfast. We'd highly reccomend the Avenue to anyone visiting the area.

My husband and I are frequent visitors to the pub when we come up to Durham. We have had several overnight stays and found the hospitality of Tracy and Geoff outstanding. I can't comment on the beer but my husband certainly has no complaints. We have always been met with a very warm welcome by bar staff and customers alike. It really is a very friendly part of the world. I read the reviews on the page with interest and can only say that these people must have been to a different pub than I visited. Trace and Geoff have always made us aware if there is an event on in the pub when we have stayed so we have been prepared and even joined in on occasion. Yes - the pub can be noisy and you can experience some noise late at night but what do you expect when you book bed and breakfast at a pub!

This used to be a decent pub with friendly locals - it's barely recognisable these days. We had the misfortune to use its B&B facilities recently. I use the term B&B loosely given there was no breakfast and it was only possible to get to sleep after 2am given the parties/lock-ins in the bar below.

This is an "Average" local pub with few distinguishing features. The building itself is unexceptional – basically a pub on the end of a terrace. There was an attached restaurant in the old lounge but this closed down prior to the last change of ownership. Situation wise it lies in High Shincliffe which is nicer than average commuter village but bear in mind it is 10 minutes walk from Bowburn which hosts some undesirable elements. Décor wise the Avenue is unremarkable. The beer is probably best described as average with a limited range of keg beers available. Real ale fans need to look elsewhere. Its worth noting the pub occasionally has late sessions/discos – these nights are probably worth avoiding since the clientele may be somewhat different from usual. Generally the Avenue is unmemorable and does not stand comparison with the Rose Tree let alone the 7 Stars – both of which are in Shincliffe proper only 15 minutes walk away. Most locals feel the extra exercise is a good investment. If you need somewhere to stay the Bracken Hotel between High Shincliffe and Shincliffe is a much better option. Sorry, but the previous review was unrealistic, I would hate to think of someone making a long journey on the basis of it.

The Avenue Pub is in a gorgeous village called High Shincliff, just outside Durham! In Durham you have loads of History with the Cathedral and the Castle. Gorgeous little shops and some amazing cafes and coffee shops! The problem is if you stay at "The Avenue" you won't want to leave to go site seeing. I have never been to a more fantastic place! Tracey and Geoff are so friendly you feel like one of the family (and you should see spike the dog) The locals are really welcoming. There is quiz night on a monday. A dart board and a massive tv screen where you can watch all the sport, but to be honest just to sit and chat and watch the world go by is fun enough! My room was on the 2nd floor and I had gorgeous oak beams and it was light and airy. Lemon furnishings and a great little on-suite! The breakfast is one of the best I have ever eaten! If you want a break away to see village life, go to The Avenue!!! I loved it!!
