The site finally has new owners! As you have probably read this site was in desperate need of new owners / management. The park was taken over late last year and what a difference! The park has been rebuilt with all new facilities, new pitches, new roads, parking, electric hookups and a new nice and friendly atmosphere. The park now allows dogs and is very child friendly. Well worth a visit!

BEWARE ALL MOTORHOME OWNERS!!I am am a 78 year old disabled motorhome owner and my wife and I decided to visit Glen Trothy for the first time last weekend after it had been recommended to us by friends. NEVER AGAIN! When we arrived we were greeted by the lady who owned it only to find that we were the only motorhome there. We did think this was a bit strange as motorhomes are usually plentiful in most sites we have visited over the past 20 years. During our stay we felt as though we were being constantly watched and the lady owner seemed to be always checking what her guests were doing and how they were doing it. Also, the site rules are numerous, accompanied by threats that rule breaking will result in being asked to leave! On our day of departure I drove my small motohome to the waste diposal unit to empty my waste and toilet as I usually do on other sites as I find it difficult to lift or carry with crippling arthritis in my hands, arms and legs. As I got out of my van I was appraoched by a very angry male owner who ordered me to drive my van back to my pitch (which was at the opposite end of the site!)and carry the waste back over myself as he did not want any grass damaged! He became quite aggressive when I informed him that I was unable to lift and carry so I chose to ignore his rantings and continued to empty my waste anyway, whilst infoming him that I would never be returning to this site. I now realise why we were the only motorhome present! This is a pleasant site with beautiful countryside surroundings but beware any potential visitors, especially motorhome owners, you WILL NOT get a warm welcome.

The rudest owners I have ever met. The worst campsite we have ever stayed at. Noisy site with no pub or shop within 3 miles. DO NOT STAY AT THE GLEN TROTHY YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

We wondered why this site had so many pitches available when everywhere else was booked solid. We soon discovered why. As a family we totally understand having rules but on this site the rules are enforced to the suiting of the owners. Breach them and you are out. We were horrified when we arrived to discover the male owner was in the process of grabbing kids on the site and accusing them of breaking the windscreen of a passing car. This perhaps gives an indication of the proximity to two busy and noisy roads. One of the dads defended his son and was told to P**s off and get off my site. Welcome to the Glen Trothy Camp Site. Undeterred we pitched our tent and went into town with our 3 kids. When we arrived back late that night we were told we had pitched the tent incorrectly and told in no uncertain terms to repitch or get off. Our appeals for clemency fell on deaf ears and that set the tone for the weekend. The male owner was very aggressive and clashed with another dad over some minor infringement but was noticeably absent when the drunks from the tent opposite decided to start kicking bins over at 1.30 am. Luckily they didn't wake us though as the constant flow of heavy lorries on the A40 ensured an evening spent counting sheep was in order. The Big Brother feeling of being under constant surveillance was very disconcerting and we found that we dreaded leaving or entering the site as Mrs Site Owner would come out to admonish us over leaving toys out, parking our vehicle the wrong way round etc etc etc This controlling of the gate in and out is somewhat used as a means of threatening you with expulsion and I often worried that we would be denied access to retrieve our belongings. That this site still exists with the customer service we encountered is testimony to the resillience of camping folk. I certainly wouldn't go back and there are far nicer sites locally to explore a truly beautiful area.

When me and my girlfriend visited this camp site, we were expecting the worst (having read the reviews dotted around the internet). So when we arrived there we were pleasantly surprised. This is a wonderful camp site with excellent facilities (though the showers could have been a bit warmer) and everyone was very friendly, including the proprietors Horace and Myrhl, who other reviewers have been less than kind to. There are many attractions a short drive away, and Monmouth (the closest large town) is a 20 minute walk. One downside we found, was that, though the duel carriageway is barely audible, the road you must follow to reach the camp site has a national speed limit and as such, is a source of loud noise quite regularly through the night. On the whole this camp site is a pleasant place to stay for those who like to relax, it does however not have a clubhouse or other such facilities, so if you like to keep busy without having to travel, this is not the place for you.

we booked to stay on this site on friday 6th july my husband myself and three young children, ages 2, 3, &6, when we arrived we almost missed the site when we pulled on to it my husband pulled up on the right side of the drive, there was aman watering his plants he said in a nasty manner we were on the wrong side to which we said sorry, he asked us if we were blind as we had not seen the sign were to park,he refused to lift the barrier for us to go on the site he got very abusive, we had to reverse up the drive which was a hill, our clutch was burning and he still refused to open the barrier, all this time the children were crying the man was using very bad swear words, i asked him to stop swearing because of the children, we manage to get out of the drive, with smoke coming from our car. It was our first time with our caravan after a break of 10 years. It was not a very nice start to our weekend and will not reccomend this site to anyone.

I sited my caravan here for a few years and found Merle to be fair, hospitable and accomodating. The site was spotless and the local area stunning. There's a b road just by the site but a small price to pay for such a lovely site central to such a wonderful area. As the other reviewer said make your own mind up, you'll probably be very surprised. Caroline

Over the last 2 years my family and I've been to Glen Trothy on a number of occassions. We were there more recently in July (2008)- and we not only found the facilities to be clean, but thought (in their defence!) that Merle and Horace were friendly / hospitable! We seriously didn't have a problem and would encourage others to make their own mind up! A fair dousing of rain on our last couple of days - but hey, can't have everything ...

There was a large group of us and they had something different to moan about to each family about. They just set out to ruin your stay. On a brighter note this is a lovely clean site but it is next to a very busy noisy main road so if you like you sleep this is a no.

Just arrived back from Glen Trothy in Monmouthshire the campsite pitches were very nice not much space between caravans But could not tolerate the owner. as i dont have to say anything as the reviews of others say it all. He is the most arrigant man and the rudest man i have ever come across. He ordered us off the pitch and told us hat we would lose or £10 barrier card refund all because we pushed the caravan back the length of the car to hitch up to. as we could not swing around to get out as the car next to us and across the way were parked outside their caravans and it was difficult to get out. And we had a electric hook up straight in the middle of our pitch so it was difficult to get out he came over and was ranting and raving and orderd us off immeadiately so i agree stay away from there it is a lot easier. There are many more reasons i could go on and on but it would take me all night.Wish i read these reviews before going. nice site shame about the owners. She is as bad as him also.

Glen Trothy campsite, What can I say? The site itself is clean and pleasant, the people who stay on the site on the seasonal pitches were also very friendly. The owners were the rudest most unreasonable people I have ever come accross and should honestly not be in the tourism business. I could not even begin to go into the examples of their rudeness as I would be here for ever. I only hope that they sell up and retire so that peace and tranquility can be regained at this site as it was before under the previous owner.

DO NOT VISIT this site!! The owner Horace is by a very long way the rudest, most horrible man I have ever met. They have so many rules and regulations at this site, you will need to study for three weeks just to comply. If your tent is just 3" out of line, he will get you to move it. AND he won't ask at all nicely, he will be agressive and very rude. We went as a group and he removed one of our friends from the site because he didn't use the entrance in the right way. He waited until he had payed though. This man completely ruined our weekend and I will never stay here again and am writing a letter to the Welsh Tourist Board now. DO NOT GO TO THIS SITE.

Nay, nay, never Glen Trothy again! My advice: avoid this site like the plague! I visited this site annually since 1990. The previous owners were nice and helpful people. Since the last 5 years the site is owned by Horace and Merle Price . I live in The Netherlands and I took a season pitch on this site because I made many friends on the site and in the village of Mitchel Troy. When I retired I took a season pitch and travelled up and down to spend many weeks with my friends together with my wife. I had the season pitch from 2003-2005. But the owners have their sometimes weird rules and regulations which they try to impose on their guests. As a liberal Dutchman I questioned some rules and the only answer I got was: "I'm not going to argue with you and if you don't like it p*** off and go elsewhere". Matters got worse and worse through the years and especially during our last two months in 2005 Horace Price went into great length trying to get me angry and this also upset my wife so much that she was sometimes in tears and we both had restless nights where we could hardly sleep. Gerrit mail@gerritfianen.nl P.S. Starting the 2006 season I will be at a beautiful site on the banks of the river Wye called Lucksall in Mordiford near Hereford with nice and friendly proprietors Gary and Deborah Williams.
