Attended the Gardeners for a meal last night. I have to say that the food was superb and the service was second to none. Such friendly and accommodating staff. There was a busy wedding on in their function suite - but the staff still went the extra mile to make sure we received the best service. We both had fish and chips - which were huge portions and very fresh. Fabulous! We'll definitely be returning!

We recently renewed our wedding vows at The Gardeners, having booked (and paid a deposit) over a year ago with the previous management. We were very anxious about the event beforehand as we were aware that there had been several changes of management and, as regular bar/restaurant customers, we had noticed a distinct decline in service and quality. However, we were contacted by Amanda, the wedding/event co-ordinator and met up with her to discuss our event. From that point on, we were blown away by the service we received. Every detail was perfect and the staff bent over backwards to ensure that we had the perfect day. Everything, from the planning stages, the incredible rooms, fabulous food, relaxed and calm atmosphere to all of the special little touches made this the most perfect day ever. The children's play area, impressive outdoor beer garden area and kids' menu means that even the youngest visitors to The Gardeners are well catered for! All of our guests, whether staying overnight or just guests at the ceremony and reception were astounded by the level of service we received (especially the attention given to us all by Amanda) and several friends and family members have mentioned that they are considering an event at The Gardeners themselves!! The new management have already made noticeable changes (including making prices more reasonable and improving the premises and menu!) and we understand that more improvements are continuing to be made. We are already planning to hold future events at this venue and would highly recommend The Gardeners to anyone looking for the perfect wedding/party/meal/B&B or even just a relaxing drink at the bar! Thank you so much to Amanda, Lauren, Ruth and the rest of the team for making our special day so perfect and for creating a wedding that ourselves and our guests will remember for a very long time!! 5 STARS!!!

We have not dined at The Gardeners for a while so it was a pleasant surprise when we walked in to find that it is now under new ownership which seems to have given it a mood uplift! Food and service were excellent and after a few drinks in the bar we retired to our mezzanine cabin with quite the biggest jacuzzi we've ever seen! Champagne and a jacuzzi just about rounded off the perfect night! Well worth a visit and stay over just for the jacuzzi alone!

we have just been to my friends wedding at the gardeners at coniston and we felt we needed to leave some feedback,we have heard various rumours about the pub closing down etc, all this is untrue and what a fantastic and friendly place it is!! the wedding day itself went so smooth and the staff went out of their way to make everyone feel really welcome, we have since returned to have a bar meal which turned out to be their steak night and once again we really enjoyed it but we did have to wait 20 minutes but only because we hadnt booked a table but we were looked after while we waited. All in all a lovely place and we will definately be going back!

We stayed at the Gardeners for a few days and what a lovely place to stay at, or just visit for a nice time out. Thankfully it has recently been taken on by new management who we met whilst staying there. They are a lovely couple and willing to take on board any genuine suggestions from customers, which we found made a nice change. The food was great and all our party requested that the chef was thanked for making us happy (says something these days), as been to some places lately that left me far than happy. My party and I would highly recommend giving this place a go for a nice meal out, or staying over with functions as I had a peep in the room and it looked great! Have made a booking for a family milestone birthday party next year already, as was treated so well and we are really looking forward to returning soon. Just would like to sincerely thank everyone for their friendliness and great service, looking forward to seeing you all again soon. It's not far from Hornsea coast which is a lovely place to visit if you stay over!

I have been coming to this establishment for several years now and it has been disappointing to note that it has changed hands a couple of times recently. Fortunately it now seems that permanent owners are back in place - and what a difference it had made! I stayed in the hotel last night and the standards of cleanliness and service are much improved. The food in the restaurant is very good - I would certainly recommend the Sunday Carvery which I had today. I shall be coming back to stay, and to eat in the future. Highly recommended. Chris

Brilliant, this pub has undergone a superb transformation since the previous owners ran it! The staff are always friendly and the food is better than your average pub meal out, never had any problems! Visit at least once a month with my wife and 4 and 2 year old. The staff are always helpful and polite, and surroundings are nice, clean and comfortable

My first choice wasn't available so I had a steak and asked for it cooked medium. The steak arrived after a 45 min wait, it was very overcooked and very dry. The chips tasted as though they wern't fresh and were either microwaved or over done oven chips. While you cant judge a place through one bad meal and everybody gets it wrong occasionally, I was passing through and it was their one and only chance to impress and they didnt. When I complained I got no discount and got nothing more than a sorry and even that some extracting. The toilets had a typical pub toilet odor which was unpleasant. When I was coming back from the toilet the smoke coming from the kitchen area was very heavy so dont know what was going on in there. Sorry of my visit list for the future and wont even rate it one star....

We held our wedding reception here yesterday, and it was exceptional. From the original meeting to booK, Lisa and Stuart were most helpful. Nothing was too much trouble, and the staff were very helpful on the day. The food was very good and hot were needed, cool when required. We are two senior newly weds and this made our day complete. Thanks and well done to you all Ann and Keith - Hull

Origanally 5 Engineers working at BP Saltend gradually rising to 10 persons all live here for nearly 6wks. My collegue and myself brought our wives down for a weekend and they thoruoghly enjoyed the accom general surroundings/staff hospitality and the food. My collegues and I especially looked forward to the steak night. With the exception of a few very minor issues which were speedily resolved when highlighted to Stewart, Lisa or any staff member I have no complaints what-so-ever. I have made many new friends at this establishment and would happily book in again. My Collegues are already contemplating a reunion here and looking forward to it. WELL DONE STEWAT AND LISA Regards Rod

Just wanted to say what a great afternoon my husband, daughter, son and I spent with our family and friends at The Gardners to celebrate my sons christening and 1st birthday on 28 June 2009. Stewart and Lisa were great hosts and really helpful in the run up to the day and on the day. We had a lovely buffet and the afternoon ran really smoothly. The children enjoyed the play area, we were lucky that the sun was out and we were able to sit outside as well as use the function room - a day to remember for us. We ourselves had lots of comments on what a great afternoon our family and friends had had, some of whom had travelled from out of Hull to join us. Would recommend this venue to anyone looking for someone 'nice' to host a party esp if you have adults and children. We really struggled to find an appropriate venue living in Sutton that would cater for what we wanted and had a decent outside space for the children to use. thanks to Stewart, Lisa and their staff(and Stewart esp for his offer of helping us transport gifts etc home as we were struggling for space in our car!)looking forward to coming for Sunday lunch one weekend. 21.7.09

Dear Andy, If you wish to make some sort of accusation with regard to my identity, please do so, and feel free to elaborate on your own identity whilst you're at it. I have no relation with either the previous or current management of the Gardeners Country Inn. On the weekend concerned in my review, I visited this venue as a customer, just as I used to under the previous management. My review was simply an account of the events I witnessed on the weekend in question. If you were privy to more information regarding these events, I would be interested to know exactly where the so-called inaccuracies in my review are. You mention very specific issues with reference to the previous management, but surely, the actions and practices of previous management should have no bearing on how the new management treat their own customers, whether they are related to the previous management or not. Regardless of whether the young lady mentioned in my review was a relative of the previous landlord or not, she was presumably also a paying customer and would therefore deserve and be entitled to the same consumer rights as any other paying customer, such as you or I. If she or her family had an issue with the service they received, then they would have the right to say so, and still be treated in a civil and professional manner. I certainly would not expect any management to turn away business in such a manner, especially given the current economic climate we find ourselves in. I can only comment upon what I saw during my visit to the venue, and although I may not have all the details, I feel what I did witness was enough to make a pretty good judgement of the situation. Combined with information provided by other customers who were also present on the day, I fail to see how the events could have been interpreted in any other way than illustrated in my review. As I said earlier, perhaps you were in such a position that you had a vantage point that I did not, and were able to see things that I couldn't. Seeing as how making allegations seems to be the fashion, my suspicion would be, that you yourself are a member of staff, possibly even manangement, and that is how you claim to have such an in-depth knowledge of the events. If this is in fact the case, then of course you would do everything in your power to defend your actions, including writing a fake review. If my hunch is correct, I only hope that you spell check your menus before allowing the public to read them! If you are indeed a genuine customer, then I wonder how long you spent in the pub before attempting to write your review?

I feel i must make comment about johns review of gardeners if indeed this is his name i feel it isnt and this is some sort of retribution for what actually happened on this day and indeed trying to damage a familys livlehood with his review. Iam a local in this venue and find the new management to be honest, hardworking and have brought this pub off its knees and turned it into the hub of the community were all the locals can congragate which is fantastic as the previous management did its best to destroy the place and the only thing that gathered was the landlords array of animals and rodents. I witnessed the situtaion john refers to and without going into detail his version is so far from the truth its nearing on unbelievable. Lisa and stewart did there upmost to resolve the situation but sometimes giving someone the world is not enough and if someone is been deliberatley awkward then you carnt resolve anything. His comments about the toilets, waiting times are again his act of retrbution and are totally unporfound. I feel this is also an act of jelousy as his family were the previous management and as i said destroyed a great pub. Carry on the good work lisa/stewart the gardeners is on the up and the talk of the town!!!

Whilst I appreciate that different people will have varying experiences in any establishment, I have to say that my experience of the Gardeners Country Inn on this particular weekend was not what I expected. Having visited the inn many times under the previous management, I perhaps naively thought that things would be pretty much the same under the new management. The staff members behind the bar seemed to be struggling most of the time with the till operation and this resulted in a 10-20 minute wait at times, even though the pub wasn't what I would consider busy. I witnessed customers walking out as much of the menu was unavailable due to the kitchen having run out of supplies, and also a customer who had waited 45 minutes for a meal, and then requested a refund. I also observed a staff member standing over a small disabled man loudly talking over him, telling him that she felt it was acceptable to send out cold food as a customer could always send it back and it was better cold than burning your mouth off! - Glad I was only in for a drink in this case! Inevitably during a visit to a pub, at some point nature calls, and to be quite honest, I wish it hadn't. The gents toilets (obviously I can't speak for the ladies) were like something out of 'How Clean is your House' before those two women get their gloves on! On my return to the bar, I passed by a young woman crying in the corridor. I asked if she was ok (silly question, really), but she was too upset to speak. After talking to some of the other customers, it turns out this young lady is the daughter of the previous landlord, and the new management had just cancelled her wedding (which was some time this summer apparently) at their venue as concerns were raised by her and her family regarding the quality of the food and service. I went back to check on her later, but she had gone. Other customers filled in the blanks here: the young lady and her family, which included the small disabled man, were marched off the premises by the management, shortly after their wedding had been cancelled. Obviously I don't know all the details here, but one thing I do know is, I need to find a new local as a trip back here would inevitably result in me getting barred for speaking my mind, judging by what I saw on this weekend and how other customers were treated for doing the same.

We held our wedding at the gardeners, the staff was helpful and very attentive from the moment we arrived the room's were great the bridal suite is amazing, the day was always going to be amazing for us, but i feel it was made even better by the staff who showed care and attention to every details, offering suggestions and going the extra mile IE, dressing the bridal suite, asking if any of our guests drank any unusual drinks as if so they would get them for us they where also very family orientated making sure they catered for the children with special food and drink choices and were accommodating with any other requests we made. The food went down really well with all our guests they catered for over 70 people with ease and where properly staffed for the occasion no one waited for there food and unlike at every other wedding i have been to i didn't spend most of my time waiting at the bar to be served. The DJ provided by the Gardner's was also really good and played anything we requested and got really into the spirit of things. As for the morning after breakfast was great a choice of cereals, and refreshments followed by your cooked breakfast of choice our party had all sorts of request all of which were met and tasted great. The gardeners is now under new management Stuart and Lisa are lovely and really made us feel relaxed and i feel contributed to making this such a special day.

And about time too because its a gorgeous place in a wonderfull setting. there is a new good menu and new chef. And even a bouncy castle for the children fantastc! This was our second vist since the take over, and i must say the steaks on a tuesday night are lovely 6.95 16oz rump! I didnt even know about the function facility or the luxury jaccuzzi rooms, untill my last visit. Give the place a try its got my vote for a good pub at the east side of the city!!!!!

Can honestly say that this was our worst ever meal. Prawn cocktail to start, plate puddled with water from prawns or lettuce, but edible. Main course, Chicken provancale was microwaved chicken topped with cheese and laid on a bed of tinned tomatoes. Gammon(cut so thin we thought it was rationed) and eggs swimming in black fat. Complaints fell on deaf ears they had had payment first. Generally speaking one step down from a greasy spoon caff. The place overall is very run down unfriendly and I would not recommend a visit to a starving enemy.

Stayed here whilst visiting family and friends. Surroundings great, rooms nice although don't alow much natural light in and our room was missing 7 lightbulbs!! The shower had a leak but this didn't spoil our opinion. Saturday night went ok, we ate in the pub which was an almost passable meal, had a great nights sleep and breakfast although very greasy was hot and fresh coffee on hand but the tea never did arrive. Refreshments topped up and we were asked if we wanted clean towels. Sunday evening Arrived back at appartment got settled about to retire when cars started doing handbrake turns around the car park, thsi went on for an hour. Then some locals and staff (about 6)were making a lot of noise till 3.30 am. Manager was unable to be contacted. When tackled the following morning didn't make any apologies denied any knowledge of there being anymore than 2 locals staying. Made no offerings to rectify the problem. WOULD NOT RECCOMEND AT ALL
