Lucky to get in on Valentine's night and the management did squeeze us in with great service. From there it went downhill to the depths. The place was obviously fully booked, I wonder why?? The scallops my wife had were overcooked and as a consequence tough. My Pate starter was obviously cut from a catering block and fatty as hell. Main course for myself was surf and turf. Steak looked good but bland and completely tasteless. Boiled mushrooms which tasted of boiled water. Three large prawns were overcooked or should I say defrosted and the garlic puree one was covered in was obviously from a jar of preserved garlic. Bitter taste of garlic from the preservative and unedible. Chips ok but lukewarm. Out of date French mustard from an open jar with the cling film recently removed. My wife's plaice was overcooked and tasteless. Veg was bland and obviously frozen. Beer poor, the Youngs bitter awful and the Theaksons dark just about drinkable. all in all probably the worst meal have had in a very long time and needless to say, I will not be going there again. I took my son and his partner for a birthday meal, they are in their 20's.I have used the Pheasant for special occasions for many years,it improved after the present owners bought it a number of years ago.The chef is excellent as is all the different food on offer,I had grilled salmon, new potatoes peas and homemade hollandaise sauce, beautiful. My son had 10oz Gammon, chips and peas with salad dressing, also excellent, his partner who is vegetarian had the Vegetable sizzling skillet, with a couple of veg, missed out she didn't like. All cooked to order with no sound of microwave "pings".It was their first visit but they said,it will not be their last. The staff were very attentive checking all was well throughout the meal and on leaving the management checked again. I can thoroughly recommend this place. We left "stuffed" and happy.

What a shabby and uninspiring time we had, the day we frequented The Pheasant. Usual 'pings' from a tower of microwaves coupled with the sizzling of the deep-fat fryers. Unimpressed with the service, the seating and the bill. With this credit crunch and customers patronage 'valued', you'd HONESTLY think the hosts of The Pheasant would try a little harder to keep possible repeat business. Nice looking building from the outside, but the usual mix of slack-jawed locals propping up the bar, moaning about 'townies' in their village! Mugs!

This recently reopened contemporary art gallery makes imaginative use of the charming yet modest grade II listed building which was the former home and studio of the artist Thelma Hulbert. On display on the day we visited were several pieces of work by an assortment of artists demonstrating tremendous competency and skill in a number of disciplines including sculpture, painting, printmaking and photography. We were delighted to see the Learning Room being busily used for a schools workshop and our children were invited to join in for free! It had a lovely friendly atmosphere. The coffee was very good too, and we bought some nice cards and crafts from the shop.

We had a terrible meal. This place years ago used to very popular and having been many times I can say it used to be very good. Times have changed as I think these guys have moved too far over into making money rather than provding a great meal. We were told it had gone down hill but we ignored it. Should have listened as it would have saved us our money and a wasted night. Food was tasteless and watery. Looks like they have it deep frozen or bubbling away on a stove in a bath of water ready to be splashed...sorry I mean served.

In passing this Public House we decided to take a chance on a meal there. It was certainly not taking a chance, both meals were well above what you would expect for a bar meal. This was high class cuisine , a nice easy to follow menu which covered everything including game. The staff were very polite and welcoming. The Venison Pie was delicious, the meat very lean and my wifes steak was first class. Well done yet it broke up in your mouth and was not hard work to eat at all. Prices were above average but this is an above average establishment.

Three out of four meals were ok. The forth which was on the special board (King prawns in white wine on a bed of rice). This was frankly awful. The six small prawns were swimming in a sea of white sauce occasionally floating into some rice and onion. It was more like a rice pudding. My partner could not eat it and left it. We told the waiter and he informed the manager. He came over full of attitude saying this is how it is served and what were you expecting. It was bland, over rich, over sauced and over priced. The meal was bad enough but the attitude after paying nearly 12 pounds for a king prawn rice pudding was shocking, I will never darken their doorstep again. I would avoid the Pheasant but if you do have to go order somthing simple thats all the chef is capable of.
