This is a pub which could do a lot better. I was celebrating my wife's birthday with her and my father-in-law and visited The Peacock for Sunday lunch. The leg of lamb which we all chose was fine, but the green vegetables and roast potatoes accompanying it were poorly cooked. French beans and broccoli were close to raw and the roast potatoes were soft on the inside and outside. The poorly trained waitress did not check if the food served was OK so it was some time before we could summon the landlord over to our table to make our views known. His reaction to the complaint was that no other complaints had been made like ours so he was at a loss to understand why there was a problem. No effort was made on his part to discuss the actual problem ; all we had was an expression of indignation. The chef appeared some moments later and gave a replica rendition of surprise that we could have found something to complain about. According to him he had an unblemished 14 year record of no complaints about his food. Incredible ! After refusing to recognise that there was a problem the landlord then refused to make any deduction from our bill, and then presented us with a bill which included charges for drinks already paid for. At this point, and after further protest from me, he perhaps realised that he had broken every rule of good customer service and grudgingly accepted a reduction for one meal out of the three. This was a dreadful experience and one I wouldn't want anyone else to have to suffer. There are many better alternatives if you want to dine out between Melton Mowbray or Grantham, where you will encounter a friendly atmosphere and where good customer service is accorded a higher priority than it is at The Peacock, Croxton Kerrial.
