The other harsh comments about the Raven were not borne out by our experience on a fine Tuesday lunchtime. For walkers, it is the only pub nearby;the setting is good; they have nice outdoor areas;colourful well-kept hanging baskets of flowers; the beer is fine. OK, the menu is not aspiring and is a bit mass catering, but it came quickly and was not all that expensive.

Today ten of us went to Hexton in Herts for a meal at the Raven pub halfway through a walk on the surrounding hills. We were looking forward to a delicious Sunday roast lunch. We were sorely disappointed. The roast lamb at a cost of £8.35 was not tender, it was obviously sliced very thinly on a machine and lacked that taste of a freshly roasted joint of lamb carved with a knife and thisket than a postage stamp. If it was just one or two who thought this, it may have been insignificant but all seven who chose the roast lamb had the same opinion. When reported to the manager she brushed the comment aside stating they were always heavily booked and nobody else complained. perhaps our standards are higher, and our experiences vaster as we eat out at different places each weekend however at the price they charge the meal was not worth even half of that price.

The eating area was overcrowded, with so many tables crammed in that it was impossible to take one's seat with any degree of ease or comfort. Standard of service was barely adequate with long delays in taking orders and serving food. When the food did arrive, although the main elements were in some cases acceptable, vegetables were all over-cooked by a considerable amount and one side order did not appear until the diner had almost finished her meal, this despite a further request and reminder that the order had not been served. The fish pie was also over-cooked, unattractive to the eye and bland to the palate. The evening was planned as a reunion with friends met on holiday who thus did not know each other that well and consequently no action was taken at the time because everyone was loathe to cause upset or embarrassment in front of the others. On reflection all four main courses should have been sent back. Four very disappointed customers!
