We have visited the Royal Oak at Downton several more times since our original comments and have never been disappointed so far, so I can only assume that remarks dated before mine in October are for previous management. The food, staff and ambience of the restaurant are all very good.

We started to revisit in October 2009 and have been impressed with the standard of food and staff on several visits since. We usually have the 2 courses for £8.95 and this is far better for value and variety and quality of food than most pub menus around the New Milton area! The décor is very pleasant too, with outside benches for light lunchers and dog walkers.

The Royal Oak has changed hands again and is now being run by Mike and Deana Stevens who have run very successful pubs for 30 years. You will always get a warm welcome now and the food is fresh and all locally sourced. There is a traditional bar menu, a 2 course lunch special menu at £8 95 and a special evening menu.
all reasonably priced I thoroughly recommend it.

Since Adrian & Sue Hodgson left this pub a year ago its deteriorated rapidly. The new owners are unwelcoming, bad mannered, have gradually disposed of their local trade and rely on the holidaymakers from the nearby caravan park for business. The agency chef's cannot reproduce the menu Adrian was renowned for, its such a shame. Dogs are now banned, so anybody hoping for refreshments whilst walking the dog in the forest are advised to go elsewhere. The food is average, featuring 'beans on toast'?? Forget it, head off to The Crown at Everton instead!
