A lovely country gastro pub in rolling countryside. Excellent beer and good wine list. Good service. Nice crockery and table furniture. Well cooked and presented food. However, the starters are decidedly miserly in size, though well thought out. My friend ordered asparagus with poached egg and parmesan shavings. The dish arrived with two thin and very small spears in the shape of a cross with a poached egg astride. All this for £5.95. All other starters with the same shortcomings. Good ingredients, but a search party required to find them! The main courses again offer either good portions or below average. There seems to be no real thought given to what constitutes a good portion control - my steak portion was exceelent, but my friend's lamb was very small. I ordered steak with horseradish gratin potatoes. The dish arrived with daphinois potatoes and nobody bothered to warn us of the change. When asked what happened to the potators, I was told they must have run out. No apologies. Puddings were excellent and portion control good. Though the restaurant offered good food and ambience, I am reluctant to return as, like most diners, looking forward to a three course meal I would not want to order a starter and therefore would opt for an establishment that offered more stable portion control.

The food is excellant - but beware - the portion sizes will leave you wondering when you are going to eat! Even the hock terrine, a very cheap dish to prepare, was sliced so thin that you could almost see through it! It is a shame, the decor and atmosphere are both warm and welcoming, the owners are charming but one can't help but feel cheated. There is a wealth of good places to eat in Devon, most of whom offer plates full of fantastic food, I suspect that unless they wise up this pub will soon close its doors.
