i have recently visited the moss cottage hotel to find that it is again under new management i thought this was going to be the same as when i visited it before but was greatly suprised as when i got there i was met by friendly staff who was there to meet any needs i had they informed me of a new menu in the restaurant and was shown to a table where i ordered my drinks that was brought promptly to my table we then ordered our food and while waiting looked round at the place and noticed that it had been freshly decorated and looked clean and inviting then the food came in good time and was very well presented on tasting the food it was great very well cooked and seasond perfectly the staff were always at hand to get you anything you wanted and was not trying to rush you out the door as we had expirianced with old staff after this visit we decided that we would definitly be returning to the moss cottage for a meal and would reccomend it to any one who has tried it before and had bad service to go again and try the food with the new manager there because it was great dont think any one would be disapointed

My husband and i visited the moss cottage today for a carvery . we was very disgusted with the meal , it was very bland no taste there was burnt yorkshire pudding the veg was swimming in water, water type gravy that you could very nearly see through it . No taste to the veg and the roast beef was to bad after you'd cut all the fat of it. We wiil not be visiting there again,

Having been to Moss cottage for a carvery party with a large number of family and friends on a Sunday I was impressed by the food,drink and service waitresses provided despite a busy day. However,visiting with just my partner towards the last hour of service for a carvery I assumed that as they were not busy service would be faster but it was very slow.We was shown to a table that had a cloth swimming with gravy and my drink contained hair. Despite this the food was very good but we was not offered a dessert,clean table or change of drink.We was just handed the bill and felt rushed to leave.

we ad our wedding at moss cottage from 1pm allday an night. the staff was fantastic always on hand 2 help. the food was fantastic and the food at night, had no complaints off any of our guests at all,everyone really enjoyed themselves. we booked 2 stay the night.the room was very clean an tidy. we had booked breakfast but didn't wake up in time so that was down 2 us. we would recommend moss cottage 2 anyone. amanda and scott allcock.

Having heard of the food and the service of the Moss Cottage we decided to give it a try. We duly booked in for 3 nights bed and breakfast. When we arrived the staff could not have been nicer, full of smiles and answering any questions that we asked. We were shown to our room and that was the first disappointment. To say the least it was very tired, a good lick of paint would not have done any harm and the carpet certainly needed cleaning. It took the young lady who showed us to the room almost 5 minutes just to get the door open, for some reason the key would not turn in the lock, a problem every time we wanted to get back in. The bed mattress was so worn that when the bottom sheet was pulled back every spring in the bed could be counted, lying on this was very uncomfortable. The en suite shower room didn't look too bad, from what we could see. The light was so dim that even if it was dirty it didn't show up. There was no television or even a radio in the room, not that we wanted them but it is the first place I have stayed in that doesn't have some form of entertainment in the room. There wasn't even a television in the lounge area of the hotel. We were asked when we would like breakfast for the following morning, this was when we were going for our dinner that evening. We told them that we would like it about 8.30am. 'No problem' said the young lady, then she showed us to our table. The dinner was a carvery with roast beef or turkey. My wife had a slice of each and I just had the beef. My beef was very tender but grey, not even a hint of pink which is how I would have thought it should be. It was also tasteless. The 'roast' potato's were just brown shells, no potato inside. The peas were cooked to a mush as was the cabbage and I had quite a job just to get the mashed potato off the serving spoon. All in all edible but only as we were hungry. This was a real shame as we had heard so much of the Moss Cottage food over the years. Breakfast the next morning wasn't much better, I had the 'full English' which was a large sausage, 2 pieces of bacon, an egg and some beans and tinned tomato. The sausage was tasteless as was the bacon, the beans and tomatoes were obviously cheap and the egg was bordering on the hard side. Not a very good breakfast. My wife just had toast which was done as she wanted it. That day my wife visited relatives while I mooched around the hotel until lunch time. I decided to have lunch as well. No problem except that it was exactly the same menu as dinner the previous evening. In fact every lunch and dinner for the week is the same except for Sunday lunch when they put another meat on, so you have a choice of 3 meats on Sunday. I took my time over lunch and went back to the room only to find it as we had left it earlier in the morning. No room servicing had been done. I then went to join my wife at the relations and we stayed there until 10'ish. Going back to the hotel I again had difficulty with the lock. Getting up next morning for breakfast we were greeted with a hotel devoid of any staff apart from a cleaner, she bless her soul tried to find someone who could get us a breakfast but there was no one in the hotel. We went out for breakfast and stayed out for the rest of the day eating at the relations house. This time the room had been cleaned so we just played hell about the fact that we had booked bed and breakfast, but got no breakfast. All apologetic and we were assured that it wouldn't happen again. Went to bed and just dropping off to sleep when the fire alarm went off. Couldn't hear anyone rushing to get outside to the fire assembly point so went to investigate as the alarm went quiet. A member of staff said that it went off because of steam from the jaccuzzi in the flat, apparently it sometimes did this. Great. Breakfast was alright I got what I wanted which was just some bacon and eggs. The bacon this time was tasty and the eggs were soft. We went out for lunch that day. That evening I fancied a drink from the bar, how silly, again the hotel was like the Marie Celeste, not a member of staff to be found. I could quite easily have served myself to all the free drink but being honest, didn't. Instead my wife, bless her, fetched drinks from the local supermarket, they were much cheaper anyway. Sunday lunch the relations came and the chef told me that morning that as well as the beef and turkey they would have pork on the menu. He said to get there early as the pork was so popular that it was soon gone, so we got there as soon as they started serving only to find out that the pork was no where near being cooked, so we would have to wait if we wanted it. All in all it was not a very pleasant stay at Moss Cottage Hotel and if anyone asked me if I would recommend it the answer would be a resounding 'no'

I don't think its the bad reviews that have put me off, as its seems clear to me that most are probably Premier Inn or Macdonald's employees but the staff rant about breakfast certainly has. Rachel

After a couple of visits to The Moss Cottage Hotel in Ripley, the 1st was while passing through the area on business i called in 1 night on the way home, not looking to great from the outside, scruffy looking and dated, gave it the benefit and i wasnt impressed at all, very mish mashed with the decor ect, there wasnt a great atmosphere, so overall wasnt a pleasent visit, the 2nd time was when i had to book in to The Moss Cottage Hotel due to the Premier Inn (10mins walk away) was fully booked, and i was just totally gob smacked with the room, very very dated, im a non smoker but someone had smoked in the room as it smelt of very strong stale smoke and i dont think the room had been used for a few days as you could clearly see a layer of dust on the TV and other areas, was far from bein nice, bed was clean so after all that i went out to eat, was certainly not eating there again, so i am 110% sure that if the Premier Inn is fully booked again and they have 60 rooms i will travel to Derby or Nottingham just to get a hotel room, The Moss Cottage has 14 rooms and the horrid night i spent there, there were only 3 cars in the carpark so it makes you wonder why The Moss is disgracfully quiet

I HAVE RECENTLY REVISITED THE MOSS COTTAGE HOTEL 3 TIMES SINCE THE NEW MANAGERS HAVE BEEN THERE AND ID STILL OPENLY SAY THAT "ALL" THE PREVIOUS REVIEWS STILL STAND, YOU PULL UP IN THE CAR PARK AND LOOK UP TO THE TOP WINDOW AND SEE IT BOARDED UP WALK ROUND TO THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING AND SEE ROTTEN WINDOWS, BROKEN LIGHTS ALL THIS IS NOT VERY INSPIRING AND LOOKS FAR FROM GOOD FOR BUISNESS, MAC D'S IS MORE INVITING. I AGREE THAT THE FOOD IS GOOD BUT WHEN THE ATMOSPHERE IS WELCOMING AND THE WAITING TIME TO GET SERVED AND EVEN JUST WAITING 20MINS FOR A MED/RARE STEAK WITH 3 TABLES OCCUPIED AND ALREADY EATING, I THINK THIS TAKES THE P***. ADVICE FOR THIS PLACE, BOARD IT UP AND DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ANYWAY RANT OVER, JUST TAKE YOURSELVES OFF TO A TAKEAWAY AND BOOK IN TO A B&B Chris D

this hotel is now under new ownership, thew old chef tony is back !!, his food is nothing short of spectacular, i know the previous reviews are probably true, Tracey and Tony, the new owners, already have a very good reputation in the pub/hotel/entertainment business, i will garauntee that within 6 months the place will be ramming, best wishes Tracy n tony, Alan.

This business needs to be given a wide berth, i was working in the area and was in need of a hotel and came across The Moss, i wasnt really greeted very well to begin with but had no choice but had to stay as i needed a room with leaving home at 5am that morning for work and i was very tired, anyway checked into the hotel and on the way to the room the carpet in the corridor was dirty, cobwebs on the ceiling...when i got to the room it smelt aweful of smoke but pretty clean until i went to use the toilet, the bathroom wasnt in the cleanest of states, checked the bed linen and towels and thankfully they were clean, got my head down for and hour while waiting for the bar/restaurant to open, went to the bar and ordered a pint, this didnt taste to good, the atmosphere was just dead, got a table in the restaurant, well let me just say i wish i had found a take away!!! Certainly wont be stopping there again, and thank fully i have now found a new build hotel, Premier Inn, it has a food pub next to it a Mac Donalds and also a sainsburys, so im sure i will get better food and better service in these places, i really wish id have found this review site before coming across the Moss Cottage, what a waste of my money

We visited for lunch today on recommendation of a friend. Service was slow - bitter beer was off, we ordered a bottle of rose wine which was like vinegar. No menu only a carvery (not really a problem) EXCEPT there was only beef on offer. This was from the day before obviously as was tough and dry. The yorkshire puddings tasted also as if from the day before and were soggy. Vegetables were uninspiring (cabbage, carrots and peas) and certainly the carrots and cabbage were tasteless. The mash potato needed seasoning and the roast were not crisp. All in order a very disappointing experience at an expensive price of £30 for 3.

I was a regular at The Moss until it went under new Management around May 2008, the staff/service was great and the fresh homecooked food was amazing, after it went under new management the food stayed great and the service on the bar and restaurant started going downhill so myself and the family gave it a few more chances but decided to give it a wide berth and found somewhere else to go.......anyway we found out it had changed management again around May/June 09 so as a family we decided to give it the benifit of dought and turned up on spek for a table for a sunday lunch around 1pm, well what can one say, we walked into the bar area to get drinks and there were someone waiting to be served (she said she had ordered them at the table when she and her family had placed there food order. That was 15mins earlier) anyway the member of staff was on the phone and we then waited another 5mins at least, and that was even while the restaurant staff just looked over and ignored us and just stayed in the restaurant area......eventually we got served and I asked for a table only to get informed there would be about a 20min wait, which we dont mind waiting if the place is busy but it wasnt, my husband walked over to the Carvery to have a look what meat and veg it was, well you can clearly see the full main restaurant from there and he counted 6 tables with no one sat at them and the staff standing behind the dessert fridge chatting, so for the duration of our wait we kept looking just to see if the tables where actually booked and they wasnt, we got called thru eventually and for our approx 45mins of being sat eating no one else used the other tables, which is prob a blessing as they hadnt been set and cleaned properly... So as you can imagine the service was outragously appauling and the standards of the food had dropped dramatically, when new people take over e.g bar/restaurant we like to give it 2 to 3 new chances, this we are not returning after 1 new chance. ***THIS IS NOT A NICE PLACE TO GO***

It is a shame that such a nice place has gone down the drain, and sadly this place has.... I have been (was) a customer at The Moss for some time and unfortunatly myself-family and also my company will no longer be using this establishment... Since the Moss exchanged managers in May 08 there was an instant change in how things were run, but i dont think it was for the best, 1 of the biggest noticeable things were without a doubt was the astmosphere "VERY NEGATIVE", staff members looking very unhappy and unlike before used to talk with customers, not now they seem as they couldnt wait to finish there shift and leave.... I always like to give things the benifit of the doubt and with the Moss i have on several occations just hoping things would get better but they havnt....this is such a shame as myself and the family used to use the Moss at least twice a week and especially more when we had Birthdays and other celibrations, we would then organise a big get together with friends and family and book there and spend alot of money and leave good tips "NOT ANYMORE" yes the food is nice but the service is just so slow its pathetic, staff either walking round with faces as long as a wet weekend or stood around not doing anything or even just stood in a group behind the bar talking about personal/private things and not even quiet and some of the stuff me and other customers hear is not nice... The only time you seem to get asked how your food is, is when the waitress comes to clear the table AFTER the meal, there has been times while we have been there and people who have been in the restaurant eating have had to get up and go to the bar and say there is something wrong with the food and one of the main big problems is people COMPLAINING about how long it takes the food to be served from the kitchen and thats even on a less busy day, this is not good Business....now talking about Business, my company have now stopped using the Moss due to how bad things have got and we put, well used to put extra money in there tills because we used to book out there hotel rooms "NOT ANY MORE" the standards of the rooms have gone down, Dust-UnHoovered Carpets-Radiators not working-Rooms Smelling of Fag Smoke.... i know of many other people through my Company and on a personal basis who have stopped going, blind monkeys could run this place better, people if you read this i wouldnt waste your time & money going to the Moss Cottage, give it a wide birth and get yourself to a better place and for the hotel side book in at the NEW PREMIER INN at Ripley and for food McDonalds is better

this is an establishment that myself and my fellow work mates will no longer frequent...we have seen a serious decline in good hospitality over the past 6 months, all tho the food is good but sadly the service is certainly something to be desired and there is just no atmosphere, we have sat there on several occations, wether in the bar or restaurant and listened to staff talking about personal stuff and also witnessed lots of animosity between the staff and management (this am sure is far from being professional)...so lets just say we are very glad the new hotel has been built

my family and i were driving back home from matlock on the sunday afternoon when we stopped of at the moss cottage hotel on nottingham road near ripley we were greeted with a smile from the young lady behind the bar we asked for a table for four and were told that there was a 20min wait due to a large number bookings in that day we waited around twenty five minuites on the bar room until the young lady asked us if we were ready to come through when we got into the resturant we were sat at one of the booth tables seated round the edge of the resturant we had the carvey and when the chef had topped all the vegetables up we were asked when we were ready to go up we were pleasently suprised to find that they had lamb on as it is our favourite the chef was friendly and the portions were large we ate our meal when we had our plates taken away one of the waitresses brought the sweet menu over my son had the trilfe while my husband had the homemade apple pie both again good portions and both homemade thought our vist we never felt rushed it was the first time in a long time i have enjoyed eating out on a sunday i recomend the moss cottage to anyone and well done to the staff
