We had a really awful meal here last night and I certainly won't be visiting again. My daughter and I were handed identical looking dishes, upon tasting mine, I realised I had been give the meat lasagne and my daughter the vegetarian moussaka. The lasagne was small and average, the moussaka was just mashed potato and cheese. It went back to the chef who said it was meant to be like that! For vegetarians, I would recommend the steak and kidney pie because you will be hard pushed to find any meat in it - just suet! We used to eat regularly at the "Willy" we won't again. Better options are The Pheasant - good food, good price - just down the road or The Red Cow in Chrishall - which is pricey but you won't be disappointed.

Extremely disappointed with this pub. We were directed to a table, not shown to start with. Main course was resonably good, although it was so dark in there you could't actually see what you were eating, or if it was cooked properly. The desert was disgusting. Three of us ordered the same desert and none of us could eat it. The waitress hadn't bothered to come and ask us if everything was ok with the deserts, but when she came to clear away the plates we mentioned the puddings weren't at all nice. She said 'oh,' and cleared the plates. No apology, no 'can I get you something else?'. When the bill came we had still been charged for the puddings! We queried this and were told Chef says the pudding is fine and is supposed to taste like that. Eventually a very rude landlady came to our table and said she'd take one pudding off, very grudingly she took off a second but refused to take of the third as it had been half eaten. Would not recommend a pub with this attitude to anyone.

A very disappointing experience! It’s the third time we have visited the King William and it will almost certainly be the last. Our table was crammed into the appropriately named "Snug" and it certainly was that. The menu is enormous and a good choice for veggies, however the starters were only passable (prawn tempura / goats cheese croquettes) but it went down hill generally after that. The courses were served very close together – no time at all to relax between servings. Food was incredibly hot – we were suspicious that a microwave was in use – with a menu so large it just can’t all be cooked fresh. The veggie curry was good but the veggie moussaka was dreadful consisting of an old brown salad, bitter sun dried tomatoes and melted cheese over a few vegetables. This was so bad that we sent it back and shared the curry. We got some apologies and a free dessert – the dessert turned up after the coffees! We ordered two espressos and thought they had mistakenly brought us regular coffee - we were assured "it said espresso on the button!” We didn’t bother with the coffee or the dessert and left after expressing our concerns to the manager. He made the right expressions of regret - agreed the moussaka was not right (removed it from the menu) but frankly didn't seem that fussed. The menu states "Vegetarian Pub of the Year 2001" - we don't think it will be winning again anytime soon! Avoid.

We were regular visitors to the King William IV before we had our children 6 years ago and always found the food to be outstanding. So we were really looking forward to returning to celebrate 20 years together – we were somewhat disappointed. We were virtually sat on the same table as the couple next to us and had quite a loud party sat to the side of us – hardly the romantic setting we were hoping for. The starters (crab & prawn cocktail and shredded beef) were fine – not outstanding but fine. My main course of pork came with frozen veg (not what I had expected for £14.95) and my hubby’s” Wok Fried Tiger Prawns and Scallops with Stir Fried Vegetables and Noodles with a Caramelised Sweet Chilli Sauce” (again £14.95) seemed to be swimming in a bitter sauce. When I mentioned that I was disappointed that I’d been served frozen veg it was barely acknowledged. The Eton Mess I had for desert still had the stalks left of the strawberries and I was left fishing out bits of greenery from the cream and meringue. After all that, we were really looking forward to retiring next to the Inglenook Fireplace to have a nightcap before heading home, but found that even on such a cold night, they didn’t feel need to light the fire. I know it’s not the end of the world – but it was so cold and it’s such a beautiful fireplace...... So in the end we paid the bill and headed off home. We’d travelled over 30 miles to get there and the person giving us a lift was shocked that we wanted to go home so early. It’s such a shame – it was a great place (I even held my hen party there) but we won’t be going back again.

Wonderful menu for those who do not have a food intolerence otherwise you have to stick to the very basics.
