I could not disagree with the previous reviewer more !. We went on a circular walk which included The frog at skirmitt and The Bull and Butcher in turville..bit of a walking pub crawl ! Our experience of both the two previous pubs was not good and we were about to give up all hope and return dejected to home until we happend upon the Chequers..wow ! What a warm welcome from the family "Massey" This is a community pub run by a community minded family..Nick,Suzanne & Jamie Massey. Such a warm welcome, with wonderful locallt sourced home cooked traditional pub food. Try Suzanne's soup or lasagna or Jamie's Risotto or Fish and chips...food to die for ! Judge the pub dog (age 13 plus) is amazing ! I really do not know where the previous reviewer went but it wasn't to the Chequers! The chips are hand cut and cooked to order.. perhaps the previous people prefer frozen preformed instant chips and sawdust sausages..non of which you will find at The Chequers with Nick & Suzanne at the Helm !

Joined up with friends to enjoy a great walk around this pub and two others on route in Skirmett and Turville and wished we had eaten at either as the Chequers was not good at all. Booked table two weeks in advance and menu consisted of only three dishes for each of the starters, mains and desserts. In at 1.30pm, served food at 2.40pm! Ordered 6 ham, egg and chips and were expecting a much deserved hearty eat. Presented with measly portion of chips (looked like they had been cooked a while ago), a small piece of ham covering an even smaller piece of ham and one fried egg, as opposed to the two on the menu - no explanation for latter until we asked and were told they were running out of eggs and limiting on order. All in all really disappointing despite the £1 off for the missing egg; at the discounted £7.95 this was overpriced and really poor value for money if you are looking for something substantial or even reasonably portioned. At the very least we should have been told food would be late and not all would be served, so poor service in my book having 'hooked' you in with an order.

This is only my last visit, and delightful as usual. We've been visiting since 1985. It is classic, with two front rooms separated by a wall including a fireplace. Presumably originally the workmen were on one side and the gentry on the other. Whatever. A beautiful garden, not to be savoured in January, but certainly in June. And a five star restaurant yet further back. The most recent visit on a Sunday enjoyed a roast lamb with gravy and all the necessities... Fortunately we had hired a driver to get us home to London safely and legally. If you wish to enjoy the evening there are a number of B&Bs in the area where you can stay, just ask the management for referrals. A wonderful experience, over and over for the past 25 years.

Have just returned from a lovely lunch and thought i would write a review. Having read the previous review I am amazed, fancy a pub that sells......pub grub!! i applaud the management for running a clean friendly pub with an excellent menu - the shepherds pie was superb!. Will be back for more, hopeful that the sun may shine so we can sit in the fantastic garden.

A charming once thriving little pub that has gone downhill markedly since changing hands basicly because it is run for the conveniece of the management. The food that once had you drooling in anticipation over choice and quality has become standard pub grub - if thats how you catagorise carbonised sausages and mash for £8.75, best to order them rare. Beer remains good if over priced (£3+). On the up side the staff are happy to recommend The Frog or Bull & Butcher down the road if you're expecting food at 2pm of a Sunday - take their advice!
