This has been one of the most consistently good restaurants in the Newcastle area for years despite changing hands more than once. It is set in the beautiful countryside of Jesmond Dene only a few minutes from the centre of the city. There is a comfortable lounge for drinks and a smart dining room almost split in two so that it remains intimate. Service is a strong point here. Staff are unfailingly polite but not overwhelming and will go out of their way to accommodate special requasts. The tables are set with jugs of iced water and proper pats of butter. The food - seafood being the main point but with plenty of alternatives for meat eaters and vegetarians is served in small but rich portions. Drinks choices are good. Their set lunch menu is the best value I have had and includes canapes, three courses, coffee and homemade petit fours. Worth getting a cab out of the bustle of the city for a really good dining experience.

If you are lookingfor a real treat in the Newcastle area - LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE. We booked a table for 7.30pm and still hadn't got our starters by 9.10pm despite being taken to our table in the freezing draught from the propped open doors at 8.10. We were assured that the food would be worth waiting for - no apology - but certainly the crab starter wasn't. We waited a further 25 minutes for main courses - by which time we were getting past interest in food at all and still waiting for either an explanation or an apology. The halibut was tasteless. The grilled fillet of Northumbrian beef was dried up on the edges - obviously it had been sitting around in the kitchen while we had been kept waiting - and it was bland. When the arrogant head waiter asked how our meal was and was told we'd had better he snorted "well I am surprised" and sauntered off. We left without dessert or coffee as we couldn't stand the dentist waiting room-like surroundings any longer. The best way of describing this experience was extortion with menaces.
