what a grat day out for the whole family our party aged from 61 to 4 years there was something for everyone. The kids took grat pleasure getting tangled in the may pole and getting dressed up for the event, while the dads were very happy sampling local ale while watching. We had never been worm charming but will be going back next year to try and beat the 150 worm record. we were very proud of our first attempt at 36 worms.

Came across this event by chance whilst spending the bank holiday weekend in Devon with my 6 year old son. We entered of course and ended up having one of the most brilliant days ever.
The Locals were friendly and welcoming and after carefully mixing our secret worm charming formula (a bottle of Dandylion and Burdock really!)we set off to charm our worms. The whole day has something of a 'tongue in cheek' feel to it with the local 'worm master' directing the proceedings and the local Morris dancers leading the contestents and supporters through the village to the secret worm field. Everyone then sets about the task of charming and collecting the most worms from their individual patches of ground. You wouldn't believe the lengths some go to with their secret formulas but be warned...you can't use anything toxic as you're expected to take a drink of any formula you use before you start.
There were Worm dances, special ground beating tools and a vast array of fancy dress costumes helping the event along and afterwards, live bands played at the local pubs, housholders set up stalls and the addition of a ram roast and beer festival made the day complete. It's eccentric and the sort of event you will only find in a typically English village but I'm so glad we stumbled across it...I've already penciled it into the calander for next year...don't miss it!
