Started radio stations and acquired 28 Canadian and six US newspapers. Settled in Edinburgh in 1953. Bought British paper The Scotsman. Obtained licence for commercial television in Scotland in 1957. Bought Kemsley newspapers (including Sunday Times) in 1959, acquired The Times in 1966.
