Ian Rush is a former professional footballer born in St Asaph in Wales. He was a pupil of the St Richard Gwyn Catholic High School in Flint. When Rush left school he went directly into his career in professional football in 1978. His first club was Chester City, who were then in the third tier of the English Football League. He made his first appearance at the tail end of the 1978-1979 season but Rush made his impact the following season. He scored his first goal against Gillingham on September 15, 1979. He scored 14 goals in that season for Chester including the goal in the shock 2-0 cup victory over high flying Newcastle United that really made the football world sit up and take notice of the young Welshman.
Rush attracted interest from several major clubs and, despite his having been an Everton fan in his youth, he signed for Ian Paisley's Liverpool for £300 000. This was a record sum for a teenage player at the time and, as of 2008, remained the highest amount ever paid to a Chester City player in a transfer deal.
By the time the deal had become official, Ian Rush had already been capped for Wales. Between 1980 and 1987, Rush scored 207 goals in League and Cup for Liverpool. He twice topped a total of 40 in a single season including scoring 47 goals in 1983-84 season. During this period the team won many honours and took the only League and FA Cup double in the club's history in the 1985-86 season.
Rush was then sold to Juventus in a surprise move in 1987 this time fetching ten times the fee Liverpool had paid to Chester City in 1980. The move only lasted one season and Rush returned to Anfield. Rush enjoyed more success in front of the Kop despite fighting for his place against John Aldridge, the man Liverpool had bought in to replace him.
As of 2008 Ian Rush still holds the Welsh national team record of 28 goals from a total of 73 appearances.
