Born 1856. Died 1933 - Scottish scholar, critic and politician.

Left school at age of 13. Editor of National Reformer (1891-93). Liberal MP for Tyneside (1906-18). Wrote many books on a wide range of subjects including religion and freethinking, literary criticism, political and social issues.
