Born 1735. Died 1820 - Scottish chemist and industrialist.



Educated at Edinburgh University where he studied medicine. Member of Lunar Society, ideas on science and technology discussed. Set up glass-making business at Stourbridge in 1771. Founded the Tipton Chemical Works. Elected FRS in 1785.
