Entered Parliament in 1668 as member for Helston. Was created Baron Godolphin of Rialton in 1680 and became First Lord of the Treasury. After accession of James II he was named commissioner of the treasury in 1687. Made sole Lord High Treasurer by Queen Anne in 1702. Created Viscount Rialton and Earl of Godolphin in 1706. Dismissed from office in1710.
