Born 1824. Died 1864 - Scottish explorer, naturalist and linguist.


After studying medicine at Edinburgh he joined the Royal Navy in 1848. He was appointed surgeon and naturalist to the Niger expedition sent out in 1854, and the death of the senior officer brought him to the command. Returning to the UK, he gave an account of his work in his Narrative of an Exploring Voyage up the Rivers Kwora and Binue (1856).
