North Downs Way Surrey

Location: South East England.
Length: 246km (151 miles).
Average number of days to complete: 14.
Users: 100% for walkers, 20% for cyclists and horse riders.
Highest point: Box Hill 172m (563ft).
Start point: The Station at Farnham.
Finish point: Jubilee Gardens in Dover.
Landscape: Follows the chalk escarpment of the North Downs passing through a rich diversity of woodland, open fields and natural chalk grassland, often tracing the Pilgrims Way. 85 % within the Kent Downs and Surrey Hills designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Highlights: Denbies Vineyard, Box Hill, White Cliffs of Dover, Canterbury Cathedral, castles, Devils Kneading Trough at Wye, Watts Chapel, Polesden Lacey (National Trust property), butterflies, orchids and skylarks, views to South Downs, Weald, Romney Marsh and France.
Famous Associations: Charles Darwin, Winston Churchill, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, JMW Turner, Lewis Carrol, John Bunyan, William Wordsworth and Pilgrims.
Trail Officers favourite part: ‘Watts Chapel. Box Hill to St Marthas, for the views and woodland and the Wye Downs for the views, chalk grassland orchids’.
Nearest towns: London is 48km (30 miles) north, Winchester is 32km (20 miles) to the West. Dover, Canterbury, Guildford, Dorking, Reigate and Farnham are on the Trail.
Access: Farnham is 45 minutes from Victoria station in London, Dover is 2 hours by train from London and 2 hours from Paris. Ashford is 70 minutes from London, change for services to Wye (10 minutes).
