Keighley – as Cichhelai – is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was a tiny rural settlement (the very name meant Cyhha’s Farmstead). These days the town is reinventing itself, its heyday as a textile manufacturing town and centre for heavy engineering now the past. But there is plenty of material to work with for the future: the remaining Victorian architecture of the centre; the miles of waterside available along the Aire, the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and the Worth; and the lovely surrounding countryside including the sometimes brooding Rombald’s Moor – this is the edge of Bronte Country after all . One attraction in the town that is pleased to look backwards is the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, a little gem with just five miles of line but a long track record in the movies and TV that includes The Railway Children (“Daddy, my Daddy”), Poirot, and Last of the Summer Wine. For many residents Keighley is a dormitory town looking south to Bradford, but visitors are just as likely to be directing their attention to the countryside north of the town. Whichever way they are facing, they shouldn’t miss out on the excellent local beer – Timothy Taylor’s Landlord is rightly famed, but the town has some thriving micro-brewers too.
