Events in Saltburn By The Sea | 10 Places to Stay
Around twelve miles east of Middlesbrough in North Yorkshire in north east England, on the North Sea coast, lies the popular seaside and surfing resort of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. It is located on the Cleveland Way and to the north east of the town is the large Huntcliff topped by Warsett Hill.
A popular Victorian resort with many buildings from that era, the pier has recently been renovated. It was the site of one of the world’s oldest water-powered vertical cliff lifts but the Saltburn tramway replaced the vertical lift in 1883 on safety grounds. A year later, the railway opened and provided transport between the town and the pier.
Victorian entrepreneur, Henry Pease, founded the town when he apparently saw a vision of a heavenly city reminiscent of the description of Jerusalem in the Book of Revelation in the Bible. As a legacy, the ‘jewel’ streets along the sea front bear the names Coral, Garnet, Ruby, Emerald, Pearl, Diamond and Amber. The jewell in his crown was said to be the Zetland Hotel, one of the earliest purpose-built railway hotels in the world, which had its own private platform. The Pease family built a residence on Marine Parade and lived there until the death of Joseph Pease in 1903.
Saltburn Sands was the site where Sir Malcolm Campbell set his first record while driving Bluebird there at 138.08mph on June 17 1922.
