The village of Neston is to be found in the County of Merseyside on that peninsula of land known as The Wirral. Today Neston is often referred to as the “Jewel in the Crown” however the village was until some 200 years ago a major port exporting coal from the local mines . A combination of events saw trade from Neston as a port suffer, the River Dee silted up preventing sailing vessels from entering and Liverpool grew in strength as a trading port. Today Neston enjoys a deserved reputation as a place to visit, it did have a railway but this was closed in the mid 1950’s and converted into the Wirral Country Park, linking the towns of the West Wirral peninsula. Neston has a weekly market and regularly holds farmers and continental market days in the village. The village is not too far from Chester whilst Liverpool is a short trip away making this a much sought after location for those who enjoy village life. Neston is interwoven with footpaths and walks offering some splendid views across the River Dee and its estuary towards the North Wales hills that provides this village with an enduring appeal.
