Much Wenlock is to be found in North Shropshire and it is one of those places that is easily overlooked – if you’re not careful. The town boasts a long and interesting history which seems to have started around 680AD when a monastery was erected on the site of Wenlock Priory for monks and nuns. The following centuries saw the town grow, a new church was built, it won status as a market town and in the 1300’s a stone jail was built, Much Wenlock then had to wait until the mid 1500’s for a courthouse to be built! It was also around this time that the Dissolution of the Monasteries were being undertaken and Wenlock Priory was no exception. The 1800’s continued to see the town grow, indeed at one time it had its own railway station – now long gone, construction of the National School and Corn Exchange were being undertaken as well as the Market Hall. Today the Market Hall is better known as the town museum. This long and interesting history has left its mark on the town, in the town square there are benches from where you can admire the variety of architectural influences, Georgian and Victorian with some notable Medieval elements. It is for this reason that the town is an ideal location for many residents and tourists alike, the range of traditional shops with modern amenities and an amazing amount of outdoor activities are available nearby, from a stroll along Wenlock Edge to a stroll around Wenlock Priory and other local landmarks.
