Market Drayton is in North Shropshire and is a traditional market town first gaining its charter in the mid 13th century and today still holds one of the liveliest street markets in the area. As a market town at that time it was famous for the Damson Fairs as textile makers would buy the damsons in order to dye the cloth. The importance of this fruit is still relevant today – on a Wednesday, market day, you can buy jam, gin and pies all containing damsons. Originally a Saxon settlement it was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Draitune, in the 17th century there was a tremendous fire here in the town of Drayton, as it was then known, which destroyed most of the town, following this fire the Buttercross was erected in the centre of the town with a bell at the top for people to ring if ever there was another fire. Today the Buttercross still exists but the bell is long gone. Luckily many buildings did survive and today the town centre offers a variety of architectural styles from the 17th and 18th centuries. Nowadays Market Drayton claims to be “home of the gingerbread” which has been produced in the town for over 200 years, the first recorded production of gingerbread being in 1793 however there is evidence that it was being made in around 1390 as there is a recipe dating from that time. Locally produced gingerbread is very much a delicacy and is readily available in the local shops – and it is well worth trying! Take a trip to Market Drayton, enjoy a stroll along the Shropshire Union Canal, visit Wollerton Hall Gardens or Dorothy Clive Gardens or nearby Hawkstone Gardens and then reward yourself with a gingerbread treat, well known for its restorative powers.
