Latest reviews | Events in Somerton
Somerton is a picturesque Somerset town with a wide 17th century square. The square features an octagonal market cross, an imposing town hall as well as elegant houses and inns. The Anglican church, which dedicated to St Michael and the Angels, boasts a fine wooden roof which was lovingly carved by the monks of nearby Muchelney Abbey. The church dates back to the 13th century but the building has undergone several periods of remodelling. Somerton was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Sumertone, which may have been derived from from the Old English sae, mere and tun or 'The sea-lake enclosure'. An alternative suggested origin is from the Anglo-Saxon Sumer-tūn, meaning summer farmstead. The town is well served with local shops and a number of pubs, inns and hotels. It also has a fascinating audio trail which is available to hire from the local information centre. Somerton is an ideal base for exploring the tranquil South Somerset countryside. A self guided 80 mile cycle route around South Somerset tours through Somerton on its way across the Somerset Levels. The River Parrett trail, a 50 mile footpath that follows the course of the river, runs close by.
